Prior to SWWRPC, Tjaard worked at one of Europe’s largest geo-technical consulting and engineering firms, and graduated from the University of Utrecht, the Netherlands, with a Bachelor’s of Science in Human Geography and Planning and a Master’s of Science in International Development Studies. Tjaard’s previous related working experience, in relation to flood & natural resource management and GIS, include: examining mechanical behavior of soil using slope stability software, carrying out international market analysis, conducting field surveys, maintaining data management and GIS optimization, producing geographical maps and processed control through GIS-analysis.

At SWWRPC, Tjaard is expanding his expertise in Smart Growth Planning with his colleagues by collecting, analyzing and preparing data, creating graphical representations, and developing Smart Growth Comprehensive Plans and Economic Development Strategies. Furthermore, he coordinates and attends local planning meetings, along with collecting and providing planning resources to participating jurisdictions. Currently, Tjaard is preparing an economic flood recovery strategy and researching land-use and land-use related laws for Southwest Wisconsin.
