Transportation

Safe Routes to School (SR2S) is a program aimed at promoting walking and bicycling to school.  With safer, easier, and more enjoyable walking and bicycling routes to school, more students may choose these transportation options.  The program was created under SAFETEA-LU – the most recent federal transportation act.
Approximately $3.5 million for SR2S will be available from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) in the 2008 funding cycle.  Application materials and additional information are available from the WisDOT website at:  http://www.dot.state.wi.us/localgov/aid/saferoutes.htm

2008 Application Cycle:

  • January 2008:  SR2S applications available
  • April 4, 2008:  Application deadline
  • Summer 2008:  Program approval

Working with WisDOT, SWWRPC staff can assist communities with:

  1. Preparing an application for planning or implementation funds, and
  2. Development, under contract, of a SR2S implementation plan that responds to local needs.

Please contact Susan Sloper or Joni Graves if you community may be interested in working with SWWRPC on an SR2S application and planning/implementation initiative.
